Introduction to Wheel Throwing Class

Welcome to the introduction to wheel throwing! This class is designed for beginners who are interested in exploring the art of pottery. We will cover the fundamentals of using the pottery wheel, including centering clay, pulling walls, and shaping forms.

Class Objectives:

  • Understand the basic tools and materials used in wheel throwing.

  • Learn proper technique for centering clay on the wheel.

  • Develop skills in forming basic shapes such as bowls and cylinders.

  • Gain an overview of glazing and firing processes.

What to Expect: In the first half of the class, we will focus on hands-on practice. You will receive personalized guidance as you practice centering clay and creating your first pieces. The latter half will include discussions on surface decoration and glazing techniques.

Materials: All materials will be provided, including clay, tools, and access to the pottery wheel. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.

Class Duration: This is a two-hour introduction course.

Project: At the end of the course, you will create a sake or small cup that will be fired and glazed.
